Team Charter Facilitation

Every team runs on a set of unspoken rules — how decisions get made, how conflict gets handled, who actually has a voice. Team Charter Facilitation puts those rules in writing before they get written FOR you by whoever is loudest in the room. This is true whether you’re leading a for-profit team or a non-profit one — each comes with challenges, hurdles, and dynamics that get tougher to solve as your work together moves forward.

The Deliverable

The Team Charter

A Team Charter is a single document naming the agreed-upon rules of operation for how your team actually works. Not a policy handed down from above, but a document your team wrote together and can genuinely stand behind.

It records how decisions get made, how disagreements get handled, and how the team has agreed to hold each other accountable. Everyone signs off on it — because everyone helped write it.

Two Starting Points

Which One Is Your Team?

The right approach — and the right amount of time — depends on whether your team is starting fresh or already has history.

01

Team Charter (for new teams)

Built for teams that are just forming — a new department, a new project group, a newly merged team. We start with an interview with whoever is requesting the engagement, to understand the organizational objectives. From there, we facilitate a full-day (six-hour) session — sometimes stretching to two days, depending on the team — to bring the group together on a shared charter.

02

Rearview Mirror Team Charter (for existing teams)

This is more difficult. Existing teams come with history — unspoken tension, hidden agendas, power dynamics that have already calcified. We start by interviewing as many team members as possible, individually, to understand the lay of the land. Once we’ve gathered that picture, we book a minimum two-day session (2 x 6 hours). This work takes the time it takes.
